Part A. Preparation of 3-methylphenethyl bromide. To a solution of 3-methylphenethyl alcohol (5.0 g, 36.7 mmol) in methylene chloride at 0° C. was added triphenylphosphine (10.6 g, 40.4 mmol) and carbon tetrabromide (13.4 g, 40.4 mmol). The mixture was allowed to stir with warming to 25° C. for 16 h. The solvent was removed in vacuo and the residue was taken up in ether and filtered through a pad of silica gel. The solvent was removed in vacuo to afford 7.0 g (95%) of the title bromide.
