(a) 3-Phenoxybenzoyl Chloride: This compound was prepared as generally described in (Patent Publication No. GB 1052390). To 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (1.95 g, 9.10 mmol) dissolved in CH2Cl2 (45 mL) was added oxalyl chloride (0.89 mL, 10.01 mmol) followed by a drop of DMF. The reaction mixture was stirred overnight at rt and the solvent was removed in vacuo. The residue was taken up in Et2O, and the liquid was carefully decanted away from any remaining solid. The Et2O was evaporated and the resulting crude product was purified by short path vacuum distillation (bp=139° C./3 mm Hg) to give 1.12 g (53%) of a clear liquid: IR (neat) 1755, 1584 cm-1; 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 7.02-7.05 (m, 2H), 7.16-7.21 (m, 1H), 7.29-7.33 (m, 1H), 7.37-7.49 (m, 3H), 7.70-7.71 (m, 1H), 7.84-7.87 (m, 1H).
