Reaction Conditions:

palladium 10% on activated carbon in 1,3,5-trimethyl-benzene at 180 - 190; for 30 h;Heating / reflux;

A 2L flask equipped with an over head stirrer, nitrogen bubbler and reflux condenser was charged with tetrahydrobutylcarbonate (79g, 0.34mol), 10 % Pd/C (11.1g, 0.004mol) and trimethylbenzene. The reaction mixture was heated to reflux (180-1900C) for 30h and then allowed to cool to room temperature. Upon cooling the reaction mixture EPO crystallised out. The crystallised solution was diluted with toluene and filtered through a Buchner. The solution was filtered several times through filter paper and then 1L of hexane was added. The colourless solid which formed was filtered off affording 58.98g of product at 99.7% purity (yield 95%).
