Step 2: To the tolune solution from last step, aqueous NaOH was added, the mixture was heated to reflux for 2 hours, cooled to room temperature, extracted with EA from water, the organic layer was washed with brine, concentrated and the residue was purified by column chromatography with PE:EA=5: 1 as eluent, 3.8 g solid was obtained, yield 44%.
