Compound 4.
Methyl 2-(2-((4-bromophenyl) amino)-2-oxoethoxy)benzoate (1 g, 2.75 mmol) is dissolved in 30 mE of a mixture of tetrahydroffiran and methanol (2:1). Potassium hydroxide (0.385 g, 6.87 mmol) is dissolved in 5 mE of water and then added to the reaction mixture. This mixture is then allowed to stir for 16 hours. Water is added. The aqueous solution was then extracted with diethyl ether, and the organic phase is discarded. The aqueous phase is then placed in a round bottomed flask with a stir bar, cooled in an ice bath, and then the pH was adjusted to approximately 3. A precipitate resulted that was immediately filtered off and dried to give compound 4 as a white solid (0.88 g).
