Hydroxylamine hydrochloride (5.7 g) was added to a solution of potassium hydroxide (6.3 g) in water (25 ml_). A solution of 1 ,2-dimethyl-1 H-indole-3-carbaldehyde (6.5 g; Apollo) in ethanol (400 ml.) was added and the mixture was heated to reflux for 1.5 hr. The solvent was evaporated to give the title compound as a mixture with potassium salts (5.65 g).
