Steps:

General method for the Synthesis of 5 substituted-2-(chloromethyl)-1H-benzimidazole 1(a-d)

General procedure: A mixture of 4-(un)substituted-o phenylenediamine (0.05 mole) and chloroacetic acid (0.05 mole) was dissolved in ( 25 ml) 4N HCl and refluxed for 4 hrs. The completion of the reaction was checked by using T.L.C (mobile phase: ethylacetate: hexane 2:1). The reaction mixture was allowed to cool down and neutralized with ammonium hydroxide solution, the precipitate appeared was dried and recrystallized from (methanol/water).
