Steps:

1 1-(4-amino-2-(methylthio)pyrimidin-5-yl)ethanone.

To a suspension of 1 -(4-amino-2- (methylthio)pyrimidin-5-yl)ethanol (60 g, 0.32 mol) in toluene (600 mL) was added manganese(IV) oxide (70 g, 0.81 mol). The resulting mixture was stirred at 120 °C for 4h, at which time the mixture was diluted with 200 mL of 1 :1 tetrahydrofuran/methanol and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated to give the desired product (50. Og, 83% yield) as white solid. ¹ H NMR (DMSO-d6, 400MHz) d: 8.76 (s, 1 H), 8.43 (br. s, 1 H), 8.07 (br. s., 1 H), 2.50 (s, 3H), 2.48 (s, 3H). LC-MS: m/z 184.1 (M+H)⁺
