General procedure: A mixture of 2-formylbenzoic acid (1) (2.0 mmol), amine (2) (2.4 mmol, 1.2 equiv), DABCO (448 mg, 2 equiv), HCOOH (0.5 mL), Pd(OAc)2 (22.5 mg, 0.1 mmol, 5 mol%) in 1,4-dioxane (2 mL) was heated to 80 oC for an appropriate time (Table 3). After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature, and diluted with DCM (20 mL). The solid was removed by filter, and the filtrate was washed with water (20 mL) and brine (20 mL). The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (petroleum ether/acetone = 5/1, v/v) to afford the product 3.
