Steps:

15.1 Step 1.

AlCl3 (13.3 g, 100.0 mmol) was added into a solution of 2-methylthiophene (4.9 g, 50 mmol) and tetrahydrofuran-2,5-dione (6.0 g, 60 mmol) in DCM (150 mL) at 0^oC. After addition, the mixture was stirred at 50^oC for 3 hours. Then, the mixture was diluted with H₂O (150 mL). The organic phase was washed with H₂O and brine, dried over Na₂SO₄, filtered and concentrated to yield 4-(5-methyl-2-thienyl)-4-oxo-butanoic acid as a yellow solid (9.4 g, 95% yield). LCMS purity: 98%; MS: m/z (ES⁺) = 199 (M+H⁺).
