Compound 97 (4,8-dioxaundecane-l,ll-diol) was synthesized in three steps using established methods[33] as shown in Figure 12 - Scheme 12: (a) acrylonitrile, 2%w/v sodium hydroxide; (b) cone, sulfuric acid, 95% ethanol; (c) lithium aluminium hydride.
