General procedure: An acetamide (4 mmol) along with KOH (40 mmol) and 9:1 DI water/ethanol (50 mL) was refluxed overnight. After the reaction was complete, the ethanol was removed under reduced pressure. The residue was then dissolved in DCM washed with DI water, dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting oil could then be used without further purification in most cases. If not, aqueous HCl was added and the solution was washed with EA. The aqueous layer was basified and then washed with EA, and the organic layer was dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated under reduced pressure.
