Steps:

1 Synthesis of Intermediate (4-(methylthio)furan-2-yl)methanol

Step 1: A mixture of 4-bromofuran-2-carbaldehyde (5.0 g, 29 mmol), EtOH (9 mL), ethyl orthoformate (6.6 g, 45 mmol), and NH4Cl (1.5 g, 29 mmol) was stirred at 90 °C for 12 h. The mixture was concentrated, combined with 20 mL of H₂O, and extracted with EtOAc (2 x 20 mL). The combined extracts were washed with saturated NaHCO₃ (10 mL) and brine (10 mL), dried over Na2SO4, filtered, concentrated, and purified by silica chromatography (5-10% EtOAc in petroleum ether) to provide 4-bromo-2-(diethoxymethyl)furan (6.4 g, 26 mmol).
