Steps:
(R/S)-Ethyl 2-(4-cyanophenyl)-2-oxoacetate (1.128 g, 5.55 mmol) was dissolved in MeOH (20 mL) and cooled to 0 °C and NaBH4 (0.105 g, 2.78 mmol) was added. After stirring for lh, the solution was concentrated and then EtOAc was added. The EtOAc solution was washed with brine and sat NaHCC solution. The organic layer was dried (MgS04) and concentrated to give ethyl (R/5)-2-(4- cyanophenyl)-2-hydroxyacetate III-A (1.045 g, 5.09 mmol, 92 % yield): LCMS = 206.1 [M+H]+; XH NMR (400 MHz, methanol-d4) δ ppm 7.58-7.82 (4 H, m), 5.28 (1 H, s), 4.05-4.27 (2 H, m), 1.20 (3 H, t, J=7.15 Hz).
