Steps:
1 Step 1 : 4-fluoro-4-methyl-3-oxopentanenitrile
To a suspension of NaH (60% in oil, 2.49 g, 104 mmol) in THF (30 mL) was added ethyl 2- fluoro-2-methylpropanoate (3.5 g, 26.0 mmol), followed by the dropwise addition of acetonitrile (1 .66 g, 40.5 mmol). The resulting mixture was heated at 70 °C for 3h. The mixture was poured into water (50 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (50 mL x 2). The combined organic phases were dried (Na2SO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the title product (3.10 g, 92%) as a yellow oil.
