Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: 3-methyl-4-trifluoromethylphenylaminewith sulfuric acid;sodium nitrite in water at 0 - 5; for 1 h;
Stage #2: with potassium iodide in water at 0 - 20; for 1 h;

Steps:

164 Intermediate 164d: 4-iodo-2-methyl- 1 -(trifluoromethyl)benzene

To intennediate 164c (6.0 g, 34,26 mmol, 1 .00 equiv) in water (50 mL) at 0 °C was added sulfuric acid (7.06 g, 71.98 mmol, 2.10 equiv) followed by the drop-wise addition of a solution of NaN02 (2.60 g, 37.68 mmol, 1.10 equiv) in water (40 mL) and the mixture was stirred for 1 h. To this was added drop-wise a solution of KI (7.97 g, 48.01 mmol, 1.40 equiv) in water (40 mL) and the reaction was allowed to warm to RT and stirred for 1 h. The mixture was diluted with 200 ml, of ethyl acetate, washed with 2 x 200 ml. of Brine, 1 x 200 mL of aqueous Na^SOa , dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated. The residue was purified via silica, gel chromatography (petroleum ether/ethyl acetate, 100:1) to afford 8.2 g (85%) of intermediate 164d as a yellow oil.
