Steps:

3,5-dimethyl-4-methoxy-benzoic acid (0.500 g, 2.77 mmol) was dissolved in SOCl₂ (10.0 mL) and the stirred at RT (16 h) and then heated to reflux (15 h). Next, SOCl₂ was removed in vacuo and azeotroped twice with benzene to give 80 (0.530 g, 2.67 mmol, 96%) as a white solid. -NMR (400 MHz) CDC1₃: 7.80 (s, 2 H), 3.79 (s, 3 H), 2.34 (s, 6 H).
