Maleic anhydride (98.1 g, 1.0 mol) and p-tolyidine (137.1 g, 1.0 mol) were dissolved in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF, 320 ml), then the mixture was mixed at room temperature for 5 hours in nitrogen atmosphere. Prepared solution was poured into large amount of water to precipitate raw p-tolylmaleamic acid (N-(4-methylphenyl)maleamic acid, p-TMA). Raw p-tolylmalic acid was filtered, dried and then recrystallized three times with the mixture of water producing purified product (97%). Melting T. 160-162° C.
