Steps:
4-(Pentafluorosulfanyl)benzyl alcohol.
To an oven-dried, round bottom flask containing the aldehyde (115 mg, 0.500 mmol) and ethanol absolute (1 mL) at room temperature, was added sodium borohydrate (14 mg, 0.33 mmol). The reaction was stirred for 30 min. Aqueous NaOH solution (2 M) was then added slowly until the precipitate is completely dissolved. Ethanol was removed under vacuum. Saturated aqueous NaHCO3 solution and dichloromethane were then added and the layers were separated. The aqueous layer was extracted with dichloromethane (2 x) and then the combined organic extracts were washed with water and brine, then dried over MgSO4. The alcohol was obtained in quantitative yield as colourless oil and used without further purifications.
