Steps:
Chloroanhydride 1 (2.1 g, 10 mmol) was dissolved in THF (50 mL) and to this; concentrated aqueous ammonia (15 mL) was added at room temperature. The mixture was stirred for 2 h, then diluted with saturated aqueous NaCl and extracted with EtOAc. The combined organic extract was dried over Na2S04 and evaporated. The crude amide was suspended in toluene (150 mL) and to this SOCl2 (14.6 mL, 200 mmoL) was added. The mixture was refluxed for 48 h and then evaporated. The residue was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (eluent Petroleum ether: EtOAc = 1 : 0 to 20 : 1) to give nitrile 2 (1.16 g, 67 %) as an oil.
