Reduction of 3- and 4-Nitrofuroxans; General Procedure

General procedure: SnCl 2 (1.90 g, 10 mmol) was added to a vigorously stirred mixture ofthe corresponding nitrofuroxan 1 or 2 (1 mmol) and concd HCl (7 mL)in one portion at room temperature. The reaction mixture was stirredfor 1 h, then poured into H 2 O (15 mL) and extracted with EtOAc(3 × 15 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (30mL) and dried over MgSO 4 . The drying agent was removed by filtra-tion, the solvent was evaporated in vacuo and the residue was tritu-rated with H 2 O. The solid product was filtered, washed with cold CH-Cl 3 (2 mL) and dried in air. 4-Amino-3-phenylfuroxan (3a) 14aYield: 173 mg (98%);
