The 2.0g of 2-hydroxy-1-phenylethanone, 2.1g of potassium thiocyanate mixture of hydrochloric acid (1N) and 30ml was stirred at 90 °C for 5 hours. The reaction mixture was allowed to cool and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with saturated saline solution, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and then concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue thus obtained was washed with hexane to give 0.4g 4-phenyl-4-oxazoline-2-thione.
