4-(phenylthio)benzoic acid. A mixture of methyl 4-(phenylthio)benzoate (5 g, 20.4 mmol), lithium hydroxide monohydrate (1.1 g, 26 mmol), tetrahydrofuran (5 mL), methanol (1 mL) and water (1 mL) was stirred at 20°C for 4 hours. The mixture was neutralized to pH=l with concentrated hydrochloric acid and then extracted with ethyl acetate (15 mL x 3). The combined organic phase was dried by sodium sulfate, and then filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give 4-(phenylthio)benzoic acid as a white solid(4.5 g, 96%). LRMS (M + H+) m/z: calcd 230.04; found 230.
