Steps:

2.3. Synthesis of L-4-sulfonicacid-phenylalanine

To a solution of Sp, a mixture of 2.8 g chlorosulfonic acid (24 mmol) and 1.95 g L- phenylalanine (12 mmol) wasput in a 100mL round bottom flask while cooling anice/water bath for 12 h. Then the ice water was added intothe solution until a dark pink precipitate began to appear, which was rapidly filtrated by Buchner funnel. Then the pink solution was dissolved by distilled water while heating an oilbath at 60 °C. After the crystal was completely dissolved,added 0.5 g activated carbon to filtrate, isopropanol to crystallize.Then the crystallizations were washed with water,dried, filtered and evaporated in vacuum. Finally, we got 2.6g white solid and the yield was 87% (Fig. 1C)
