500ml three bottle, electromagnetic stirring, water bath. Add a mixture of acetonitrile, dichloromethane and water 180ml (1:1:1)With 5 g of 2-methyl-3,4-dihydroxy-tetrahydropyran, potassium bromide, sodium bisulfite 4.8 g and 3.6 g were added thereto with stirring. Stir at room temperature for 4 hours. 200 ml of water was added and stirred for 10 minutes. The aqueous phase was extracted 3 times with chloroform; the organic phases were combined and concentrated. Under reduced pressure, a 75-76°C/700 kPa fraction was collected, 1.17 g (24% yield).
