Steps:

To a mixture of 3.08 g (15.9 mmol) of 2-methyl-5-nitrobenzo[d]thiazole, 4.87 g (87.2 mmol) of powdered iron, and 6.79 g (126 mmol) of ammonium chloride was added 120 mL of methanol, and 30 mL of water. The mixture was stirred and heated at reflux for 2 h, then cooled to ambient temperature and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo, then the residue was partitioned between 60 mL of ethyl acetate and 40 mL of 10% Na2CO3. The combined ethyl acetate layers were dried over Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo. The crude product was purified via silica gel chromatography, eluting with 2:1 petroleum ether: ethyl acetate to give 2.55 g (98%) of a pale yellow solid.
