[00373] Step A: Preparation of 5-chloro-2,2-dimethylpentanenitrile: Isobutyronitrile (1.38 g, 20.0 mmol) and l-bromo-3-chloropropane (3.46 g, 22.0 mmol) were sequentially added to a 1 M solution of lithium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide (20.0 mL, 20.0 mmol) while stirring. After stirring at 70 °C for 16 hours, the reaction mixture was quenched with water then extracted with DCM. The combined organic layers were dried with MgS04, filtered and concentrated in vacuo to afford 5-chloro-2,2-dimethylpentanenitrile (2.91 g, 100% yield). 1H NMR (CDC13) δ 3.57-3.61 (m, 2H), 1.94-2.02 (m, 2H), 1.67-1.72 (m, 2H), 1.37 (s, 6H).
