The compound was dissolved in TFA (10 mL) and the resulting solution was stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. After evaporation, the residue was purified by column chromatography (n-hexane/EtOAc 1:2) affording 5-ethylpiperidine-2,4-dione (52% yield). 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-D6) δ ppm 0.89 (t, J=7.56 Hz, 3 H), 1.35 (m, 1 H), 1.69 (m, 1 H), 2.39 (m, 1 H), 3.14-3.38 (m, 4 H), 8.05 (s, 1H); ESI (+) MS: m/z 142 (MH+)
