78.2 Step 2: 5-fluoro-6-hydroxy-1-naphthoic acid
500 mg of methyl 5-fluoro-6-hydroxy-1-naphthoate was dissolved in 7 ml of tetrahydrofuran and 7 ml of water, and 381 mg of lithium hydroxide was added under stirring, followed by stirring at room temperature for 12 hours. Add 10 ml of water, acidify with 2 mol per litre of hydrochloric acid, extract with ethyl acetate, combine the organic phase, wash with saturated sodium chloride, and dry over anhydrous sodium sulfate. Filtration and concentration to give a yellow solid 5-fluoro-6-hydroxy-1-naphthoic acid, 461 mg, yield: 98%.
