5-Methylpyrazine-2-carboxylic acid is an intermediate of the lipid-lowering drug amoximus. It can be prepared by electrolytic oxidation of 2,5-dimethyl or 2-methyl-5-(substituted) methylpyrazine.

Add 200ml of water to 100g of crude axilimus, heat to 100°C, stir and dissolve, add 3.0g of activated carbon, continue to keep stirring for 20 minutes, suction filtration; cool the filtrate to 60°C at 10°C/h, then add dropwise to it 220g of acetone, after dripping, was cooled to 5°C for 7 hours at 10°C/h, filtered with suction, washed with acetone and the filter cake was dried (0.01MPa, 80°C) to obtain off-white axilimus. The yield was 88.6%.HPLC purity: 98.3%, 5-methylpyrazine-2-carboxylic acid (impurity I): 0.5%.
