Reaction Conditions:

with sodium tetrahydroborate in methanol at 0 - 20; for 16 h;

Steps:

(5-methyloxazol-2-yl)methanol (1 80A)

To a stirred solution of ethyl 5-methyloxazole-2-carboxylate (2.1 g, 13.54 mmol) in MeOH (30mL) was added NaBH4 (1.280 g, 33.8 mmol) portion wise at 0 °C. The resulting mixture slowlywarmed to RT and stirred for 16 h. The reaction mixture was them concentrated and residue was diluted with water (20 mL) and extracted with DCM (2 x 50 mL). The combined organic layer was washed with water, brine, dried (Na2SO4), filtered and the filtrate concentrated to afford the title compound 180A (1.3 g, 85 %) as a light yellow oil. LC-MS retention time = 0.395 mm; m/z= 114.2 [M+Hj K1NETEX XB-C18, (3 X 75) mm, 2.6 micron column; Flow rate: 1 mL/min;Mobile Phase A: 10 mM NH4COOH in 98% water/ 2% ACN; Mobile Phase B: 10 mMNH4COOH in 2% water/ 98% ACN; 20% B to 100% B over 4.6 mm, then hold 0.4 mm. at 20% Bwith flow rate 1-1.5 mL/min; Detection: UV at 220 nm. 1H NMR (400 MHz, DMSO-d6) ? ppm6.75 - 6.63 (s, 1H), 5.53 (br. s., 1H), 4.40 (s, 2H), 2.24 (s, 3H).
