Preparation of 6-chloro-2-phenylpyrimidine-4-carbonyl chloride:; To 1.00 g of 6-hydroxy-2-phenylpyrimidine-4-carboxylic acid was added 10 mL of phosphorus oxychloride. The reaction was heated at reflux for 1 h, then concentrated in vacuo to an oil, removing as much phosphorus oxychloride as possible. The oil was suspended in 30 mL of pentane, then the mixture was extracted with water (3 x 5 mL) and brine (1 x 5 mL). The organic layer was dried over MgSO₄, filtered, and concentrated in vacuo to give 1.03 g (88%) of the acid chloride as a white solid.
