EXAMPLE 4 STR13 500 ml of methanol are cooled to 5° C. in an ice bath and 60 g (0.2 mol) of the 5-maleimidyl-isophthalic acid dichloride prepared according to Example 1 are added, whilst stirring. The reaction mixture is then stirred for 2 hours, whilst cooling with ice, and the precipitate which has separated out is filtered off and extracted by boiling with 350 ml of methanol. The residue is dried in vacuo at 140° C. 43.2 g (75% of theory) of 5-maleimidyl-isophthalic acid dimethyl ester are obtained; melting point 186°-187° C. Analysis for C₁₄ H₁₁ NO₆ (molecular weight 289.24): Calculated: C 58.14%; H 3.84%; N 4.84%. Found: C 57.90%; H 3.83%; N 4.92%.
