Typical procedure for synthesis of 2-(4-methoxybenzylidene)-1-tetralone (5a)

General procedure: An equimolar mixture of 4-methoxybenzaldehyde (1 mmol) and 1-tetralone (1 mmol) in water (3 mL) was magnetically stirred in the presence of APP-catalyst (7 wt%) at 0 °C temperature until completion of the reaction (4 h) monitored by TLC. Then, reaction mixture was kept in refrigerator overnight, the separated solid product was obtained by simple filtration and further purified by recrystallization from 96% ethanol. All other derivatives (5b-j) were synthesized by following same procedure and confirmed by spectral techniques.
