Example 3; 2-(4-ethylphenyl)-2-methylpropionic acid methyl ester. 1.7 g (8.8mmol) of 1-(4-ethylphenyl)-2-hydroxy-2-methylpropane-1-one were dissolved in 5.2 ml trimethyl orthoformate. After adding 0.1 ml of concentrated perchloric acid the mixture was, with continuous stirring and under an inert Ar atmosphere, heated up to reflux for 48 hours. The reaction mixture was extracted with 2 x 1 ml of NaHCO3 saturated aqueous solution, dried by staying over Na2SO4, filtered off and concentrated by evaporation of the volatiles by vacuum distillation. The resulting 1.3 g of the crude product were purified by vacuum distillation. After distillation, 1.8g (8.7 mmol, 99 %) of 2-(4-ethylphenyl)-2-methyl propionic acid methyl ester were obtained.
