Reaction Conditions:
Stage #1: ethylenediamine;3,6-dibromo-phenanthrene-9,10-dione in ethanol; for 8 h;Inert atmosphere;Reflux;
Stage #2: with acetic acid in ethanol; for 9 h;Inert atmosphere;Reflux;
Steps:
7.a
Under nitrogen 3.94g (65.6 mmol) of 1,2-diaminoethane was added 350ml of anhydrous ethanol 20.0g (54.6 mmol) of 3,5-dibromo-9,10-dioxo-phenanthrene in.The reaction mixture was refluxed for 8 hours.400ml of glacial acetic acid was added and reflux was continued for additional 9 hours under air.The reaction mixture was cooled to 25 , the product was filtered, washed with ethanol and dried under vacuum at 50 .The crude product was further soxhlet extracted with toluene to give a pale beige solid as the title compound (Yield: 16.0g (76%)).
