Steps:
Typical procedure for the synthesis of flavanones:
Chalcone 7 (0.24 g, 1.0 mmol) was dissolvedin a solution of NaOH (0.24 g, 1.0 mmol) in methanol (25 ml) and the mixture was stirred at room temperature. The reaction mixture was then acidified with HCl (2 M) and then extracted three times with ethyl acetate. The organic extracts were combined and concentrated under pressure to give flavanone 9 in 95% yield.
