Reaction Conditions:

with aluminum (III) chloride in dichloromethane at -10 - 20; for 15 h;

Steps:

1.1 Step 1: Synthesis of the compound 2,2,2-trifluoromethyl-1-(2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)ethan-1-one

p-cresol (43.2 g, 400 mmol) and anhydrous aluminum trichloride (130 g, 1.0 mol) were dissolved in dry dichloromethane (400 mL) at -10 °C. Trifluoroacetic anhydride (126 g, 600 mmol) was slowly added dropwise, and the reaction was stopped after 15 h at room temperature. Water (800 mL) was slowly added to the reaction mixture, and the mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (200 mL×3). The organic phase was combined and washed with saturated brine (200 mL). The solvent was removed, the concentrate was subjected to column chromatography (eluent: Petroleum ether / EtOAc (v / v) = 15/1), to give 70.2g pale yellow oily liquid, yield: 86%.
