3.2. General procedure for compounds 4a-e.

General procedure: Compound 3a-e (1.19 mmol) was dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid (10 mL) and heated to 80 °C for 5 h. The reaction was added onto ice (50 mL) dropwise and then buffered to pH 5 with NaOH (a.q.). The resulting suspension was stirred for 30 minutes, and the precipitate was filtered and washed with water and then dried to give solid powder 4a-e.
