15O g of (+/-)-Benzyloctahydroindole-2-carboxylate hydrochloride of formula Il was taken in 1000 ml of methylene dichloride (also denoted herein as "MCC," or dichloromethane). The pH was adjusted to 9-11 with 1050 ml of 8% sodium carbonate solution at 25-35°C. The organic layer and the aqueous layer were separated. The aqueous layer was extracted twice with 400 ml of methylene dichloride. Combined organic layer was dried over 10 g of sodium sulfate. The organic layer was distilled under vacuum below 600C
