The N-Boc Saa-1 methyl ester from step 4 in the synthesis of Saa-1 was dissolved in methanol and hydrogenated on 20% Pd(OH)₂-C (50 mg per mmol of the starting material) with stirring at room temperature for 4 h. The catalyst was filtered off through a pad of Celite and the filter cake was washed with MeOH. The filtrate and washings were combined and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was chromatographed on silica gel to give N-Boc Saa-2 methyl ester in 95% yield.
