[00499] To a solution of 3-chloro-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde (400 mg, 2.55 mmol) in acetic acid (5 mL) was added concentrated nitric acid (0.1 mL) and at 0°C, the resulting suspension was stirred at 25°C for 6 h. The mixture was poured into ice water; the solid was collected by filtration, washed with water (30 mL) and dried in vacuo to give Intermediate 59 (300 mg, 58.4%).
