Step 2: 3-brorno-6-methoxy-2-methylaniline To a hot mixture of iron powder (2.16 g, 38.7 mmol), ammonium chloride (3.1 g, 58.02 mmol) and water (18 mL) in ethanol (50 ml_) was added 1-bromo-4-methoxy-2-methyl-3-nitrobenzene in portions over a period of 10 minutes. The resulting mixture was heated under reflux for 1 hour, then filtered hot through a pad of Celite, washed with ethanol and ethyl acetate. The filtrate was evaporated to remove organic solvents, and the remaining residue was extracted with methylene chloride. The methylene chloride extract was dried over anhydrous sodium
