To a mixture of (2-chloro-6-methylphenyl)methanol (236 mg), carbon tetrabromide (750 mg) and ethyl acetate (2.5 mL) was added triphenylphosphine (514 mg) under ice-cooling, and the mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 1 hr.
The reaction mixture was filtered, and the solid was washed with ethyl acetate.
The filtrates were combined, and concentrated under reduced pressure.
The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (ethyl acetate/hexane) to give 2-(bromomethyl)-1-chloro-3-methylbenzene (333 mg) as a colorless oil.
1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ2.45 (3H, s), 4.68 (2H, s), 7.06-7.20 (2H, m), 7.21-7.27 (1H, m).
