A solution of 4-chlorobenzenethiol (30 mmol, 4.32 g) in thionyl chloride (75 mmol, 6.06 ml) was heated with stirring in water bath at 70 °C until the formation of gas has stopped (about 1.5 h).
The resulting mixture was distilled under reduced pressure affording wine-red liquid.
Bp 96-97 °C (8 mbar).
Yield 4.75 g (89%).
