The Fe-Ni/ZrO2 catalysts were fabricated as described in Example 3, and the tests were carried out in a batch process with 2.0 mmol of other a-hydroxy esters such asethyl lactate, 2-propyl lactate and 1-butyl lactate, 100 mg catalyst (Fe=0.05 mmol or2.68 wt% and Ni=0.01 mmol or 0.58 wt%), 8 g of solvent (i.e. methanol (MeOH) or ethanol (EtOH) or iso-propanol, or 1-butanol), 12 hours reaction time, 220°C reaction temperature, 50 bar H2 gas pressure, and naphthalene (internal standard). The catalyst was activated at 450 °C in air followed by reduction at 300°C for 3 hours under formiergas flow (10 vol. % H2 in N2, 50m1/min).
