Step D Preparation of 4-Amino-3-cyclobutyl-butyric acid-A solution of 4-cyclobutyl-pyrrolidin-2-one (0.43 g, 3.0 mmol) in 150 mL of 6.0N HCl is warmed to reflux for 12 hours. The solvent is evaporated, and the remaining solid is triturated with hot EtOAc. The isolated solid is dissolved in 15 mL of MeOH, and 20 mL of hot EtOAc is added. After 4 hours, a white precipitate forms which is collected and dried under vacuum with P2O5. Yield=0.31 g of 4-Amino-3-cyclobutyl-butyric acid as the HCl salt; mp=115-117° C. NMR (1H, 400 MHz, DMSO)δ1.6 (4H, m); 1.9 (3H, m); 2.2 (2H, dd); 2.1 (1H, m); 2.6 (2H, m). Analysis for C8H15NO2. HCl: Calculated: C, 49.61; H, 8.33; N, 7.23; Cl, 18.31. Found: C, 49.33; H, 8.27; N, 7.17; Cl,17.93.
