Reaction Conditions:

Cyclopentanone (8.4 g) and tetrahydrofuran (200 mL) were added to a three-necked flask and cooled to 0 ° C. 166 mL of lanthanum trichloride bislithium chloride complex (0.6 mol / L tetrahydrofuran solution) was added dropwise at 0 ° C., and the mixture was stirred for 30 minutes. Next, 100 mL of t-butylmagnesium bromide (1.0 mol / L tetrahydrofuran solution) was added dropwise at 0 ° C. and stirred for 2 hours. Subsequently, 100 mL of a saturated aqueous ammonium chloride solution was added, the aqueous phase was extracted twice with 200 mL of ethyl acetate, the organic phases were combined, washed with a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution and saturated brine, and then the solvent was distilled off. The resulting crude product was purified by silica gel chromatography to obtain 12.6 g of 1-tert-butylcyclopentanol (yield 88%).
