EXAMPLE 16 0.6 g of 4-(4-ethylphenyl)-2-piperidone is added portionwise under nitrogen to a stirred suspension of 0.13 g of lithium aluminium hydride in 20 ml of absolute tetrahydrofuran. The mixture is subsequently stirred at 60° for one hour and is then cooled to room temperature; there are added dropwise 0.5 ml of water and then 0.1 ml of 2 N sodium hydroxide solution, and the whole is filtered through kieselguhr. The filtrate is concentrated by evaporation, and the resulting crude 4-(4-ethylphenyl)-piperidine is converted in the usual manner into the hydrochloride, which melts at 205°-208°.
