To a stirring solution of l-chloro-2-iodo-benzene (906 mg, 3.8 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (15 mL) was added bromo-difluoro-acetic acid ethyl ester (848 mg, 4.2 mmol) and copper bronze (604 mg, 9.44 mmol). The mixture was stirred at 96 °C for 17 hours and cooled to ambient temperature. Aqueous sodium hydrogen phosphate (IN, 10 mL, 10 mmol) was added and the mixture was stirred for 20 minutes before filtering. The solid was washed with ethyl acetate (2 x 10 mL). The upper organic layer in the filtrate was separated and washed with water (2 x 10 mL), dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated at reduced pressure. The resulting crude product was purified by column chromatography (40 g silica gel cartridge) eluting with ethyl acetate/hexane (0-10%) to give the product as a colorless oil (570 mg, 64% ,) MS(ES+) = 235(M+H)+.
